Voces 8
This one was an exciting project and a massive challenge. It was recorded by the prestigious vocal group the collection is named after, at a beautiful chapel with gorgeous acoustics (Ill update this when I remember the specific location). Shane and Maddie run the session beautifuly and we got a very large and usable set of multi-mic samples complete with legato, multiple syllables, etc. Amaznig content.
The challenge: it was not an insulated recording facility, making outside noise a huge problem, located in a very metropolitan part of the city (I assume because of the nosie).
I went so deep in denoising these performances, taking out trucks, airplanes, motorcycles, as well as the regular sounds of music stands, score paper, chairs, AC or electrical noises, performers moving, coughing, breathing, existing. This project had it all and it took various deep passes of the whole project, focusing on the noise floors, on the transient noises, on the low end, on the air. And then having it reviewed by Sam McCormick, my Amper coworker and amazingly talented audio engineer. He still had his sanity and more importantly fresh ears, so a final check and general pass from him helped ensure everything was nice and even.
At the end of the day, the instruments are not too noisy and sound pretty good to my ears (of course I am biased), but what I mean is the sound of the choir and the room come through, even tho very heavy denoising was applied, and that is a win for me.
